Unified command concludes Lyman emergency operations

COLUMBIA - Officials of the unified command, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, at the Lyman electroplating waste dumping investigation concluded emergency operations at the site Friday.

Contractor personnel for the EPA removed approximately ten cubic yards of contaminated soil from five locations along nearly 13 miles of county and state roads where the electroplating waste was spilled late last month. The excavated areas were replaced with clean soil.

DHEC officials will implement a plan to conduct follow-up sampling to determine whether any contamination has spread.

A meeting with area residents will be scheduled to discuss the incident, sampling results, and future activities.

The investigation into the cause of the dumping is continuing.
