Three Sumter schools receive DHEC’s Champions of the Environment award
COLUMBIA – A collaborative project between students at three Sumter School District Two schools has been awarded $500 from Champions of the Environment, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced today.
“Students from Brewington Academy and Lakewood High School, along with Jennifer Anderson’s kindergarten class at Oakland Primary, have been making purses from juice pouches and giving them to female residents at local nursing homes,” said Lynne LaSalle, coordinator for Champions of the Environment.
“The ‘Making it Sweeter the Second Time Around’ project is a great example of finding an alternative use for items normally slated for the landfill,” LaSalle said. “These students are learning that you don’t have to throw something out when you’re finished with it. By reusing the juice pouches, the students are reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills, the demand for raw materials and energy use.”
“This project has engaged students and taught them to be creative thinkers and protectors of the environment,” said Jackie Law, Brewington Academy counselor.
Champions of the Environment is made possible through the support of International Paper, Eastman Chemical Company, WIS-TV and DHEC. The program is in its 14th year of promoting environmental education by rewarding students and teachers for their efforts to improve and protect South Carolina’s environment.
In addition to a $500 cash prize, winners receive Champions promotional items and their project is featured in a commercial on WIS-TV in Columbia.
